Ben West and Staff – Smoky Mountain Land Surveying
Ben West, Owner and President:
Ben West has 38 years of experience in the field of land surveying, the last 33 spent as a licensed Professional in North Carolina and owner/president of Smoky Mountain Land Surveying (SMLS). Most of his surveying experience has been in Macon County and those five western counties that share a common border with Macon. Ben embarked on this career path back in 1979 when he enrolled in the Land Surveying curriculum at Southwestern Community College while working as a property boundary and road survey technician for the U.S. Forest Service.
In 1985, after several years of education, testing and experience, he was awarded his Professional Land Surveyors license and immediately purchased the active land surveying business in Franklin where he was employed at the time. Since then, Ben has taken great pride in delivering a professional product to those he serves. His duties include the deed research, computations, property boundary analytics and drafting as well as a field technician and supervisor at most job sites.
Ben West is a member of the North Carolina Society of Surveyors and the National Society of Professional Surveyors. Ben’s vision for Smoky Mountain Land Surveying was to keep it efficient and manageable. His policy of “hands-on” service dictated that the company would remain small and committed to personalized service.
Floyd Ledford, Survey Crew Chief:
Floyd Ledford, the chief of party that you will likely communicate with at the project site has been a trusted employee with the company since its establishment in 1985. Floyd’s main strength and asset is his strong work ethic and ability to perform any task on the survey crew. His attention to detail, his understanding of the surveying process and his work production talents ensures that each job progresses logically and at the proper speed. If the presence of dense underbrush causes a slowdown in the flow of work, Floyd does what most other party chiefs do not….he grabs an axe and starts cutting.
Floyd’s motto…If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right. Like the owner, Floyd is also a graduate of the Land Surveying curriculum at Southwestern Community College and takes great pride in the work he performs.
